Last night I reluctantly accompanied my husband to the Green Day concert at Madison Square Garden. I was expecting another big stadium show where I knew most if not all the tunes but would be surrounded by douche bags drinking beer and shouting the whole time.
I was surprised to see that I was very, very wrong. This was an incredible experience. No one ( I mean no one ) loves their fans more than Green Day. First Billy Joe brought on a kid to be “Saved” where he got to parade around on the stage of Madison Square Garden where the fans chanted his name over and over again. Then, he brought on 3 fans from the pit to actually sing (by themselves) a verse of Basketcase.
The Pièce de résistance was when he randomly brought on Stephanie, a somewhat nerdy outcast from the pit to play the rhythm guitar part of Jesus of Suburbia. And she was great. She was then led off stage to watch the rest of the show from backstage and no doubt, hang with the band after the show. It was a relatively small gesture but I’m sure it has changed her life forever.
Anyway it was a really great concert and I’m so glad I was dragged along to it. Here’s a little clip of them playing When I Come Around which apparently, they haven’t played live in years.
Sometimes it’s really that simple, isn’t it? I feel a little stupid for not thinking of this myself/earlier, though.
